ROSE IN THE MIST (Spenserian Sonnet)

ROSE IN THE MIST (Spenserian Sonnet)

The Rose in the Mist walks in the pink twilight forlorn,

Her eyes search the blue expanse for the ship’s sail.

Again her prayer she whispers in the early dawn;

“Please bring my love back to me upon the softest gale!”

The roar of white spray hits the jutting rocks beyond,

“Let not my hope be tossed and capsized I plea!”

Oh, Poseidon make the sea a tranquil pond

“His ship is tardy! Protect him! My heart cries to thee!”

“There are mythical monsters in the ebon depths

They bloody and maim those who fall in their snare

I hear screams as the sailors take their final breaths

While being dragged into the leviathan’s lair!”

The echo of his voice has gone away from me;

I follow its faint call… into the sea I flee!
