Seasons of Heartbreak

Winter dressed me in sheets of snow and bitter fog
Snowflakes like tears that spilt down my cheeks
That froze in my heart
Piercing the silent air
That left me in shatters
But I knew how to pretend
Spring brought me sweet flowers and warm sun
Wisps of wind kissing my exposed lips
Lips that never forgot the taste of your love
Blooming my reflections into fragile pastels
That wrapped their roots around my veins
Squeezed out my breath
But I knew how to pretend
Summer came crashing in with roaring storms and smiling faces
Dozens of the happy robots walking side by side
Licking ice cream in the sweltering misery
Like I endured in the sweat of our love
Leaving me a starry-eyed mess
Fireworks rushing back only to disappear
I still knew how to pretend
Fall danced with arrays of gold and antiquities I never discovered
Leaves falling in peace
Slowly falling to the ground
Crumpling in my hands
Like you did so many seasons ago
A shriveled fire of dancing embers
Set to crumble too soon
I still pretend.
