Poem -

See You in Spring

- To all the communism victims, translated by Yiyan Han (c), 2020-11-16

See You in Spring

Passing through the death threat we swallow our tears
On the foggy Yangtze the yellow crane can’t be seen
It’s the devil’s wish that is making new promises
Who’s saving us? Who’s still deceiving us?

Fleeing the epicentre we’d wipe away all tears
Kindness ‘n’ compassion are our last wish
Worse than the plague are the lies -
singing and dancing under a mountain of piled up bones!

Being scattered around the world our tears are bitter and brackish
Who’ll protect the depressed ‘n’ miserable homeland of once ours?
Going through huge suffering who’d ignite our aspiration -
Revolution of our time ‘n’ free China, our mission!

Be prepared by gathering our strength
Embrace a new world with unwavering faith

Footnote: Inspired by the account @hopefulland on twitter, here is my translation that is devoted to all the Chinese who are still in suffering. The Chinese text, as shown in the image, is believed to be based on a song “We Promise to Meet in the Spring (約在春天相見)” in pandemic, see, eg

The name “Wuhan” is replaced by “China” in my translation in an attempt to make this poem of greater appeal, and the subtitle is added by the translator. Yiyan Han (c), 2020-11-16

Hello Yiyan,

I was born after that generation but this is my favorite song of all time. In the void, the loss, the tears, the separation, lives hope.

the tragedies, the brutalities and injustice that contributed to the diaspora during the Japanese occupation, the war fought by the free Chinese while Mao retreated and hid, the ultimate defeat and retreat of the battered fighters for a free China by the communists, are not known much less comprehended by people here in the west. As always, the past is not known and the present ignored.

As opportunity permits, I will visit your work here. I look forward to doing so!

Thank you very much, Mark.
Yes I like the song of your favourite as well.

It's tragic for China and the world that
the commu-fascists are still in power,
unfortunately.

Best wishes,
Yiyan
