Seen It All

Drunk in front of the fire, alone in the walls of my mind,
A double-knuckle hole shaped like a heart
Behind a black and white photograph;
And yet, for me, it was only some years ago.
I take to sentimentality,
I’m too young for liquor;
Too young, as in, more to see, such as,
My first pay check,
My graduation and degree,
My first good pay check and marriage,
My first mortgage and mortgage payment,
Reputation and respect;
But I have seen all that,
I have seen all that, and more.
I have seen it all, I like to say --
But have I? Have I seen it all?
If only I was older,
Old enough to have asked that question
Too many times, if only I was sure of myself,
If only it had happened to me,
If only I had seen it all myself --
This fallacy of having to see it yourself --
I could say with stark certainty,
“I have seen it all.”
