Shadow of Us

Strangers, though once we were close,

A coldness now divides, bitter and morose.

It kills the heart, this hollow "I love you,"

A handshake replaces the hugs we once knew.

Eyes fixed to the floor as we pass by,

Our flame extinguished, left to die.

Yet we wake beside each other each day,

Living in silence, drifting further away.

How did we reach this barren shore,

Where love that bound us lives no more?

I sit alone, lost in thought's embrace,

No joy in your presence, no warmth in your face.

When did the change begin to grow?

How did your roots let me go?

Once deep within, now torn apart,

Shadows remain where love filled my heart.

We are echoes, faint whispers, and dust,

A memory of love, now broken by mistrust.

And though we still exist side by side,

We are but shadows, where love used to reside.
