Shapeshifter

Shapeshifter

What if I suddenly asked
if you see a different person in the mirror every time you wake up
Would you feel unmasked?

Shapeshifters don’t like to be flashed

A blurry stranger stares back
with eyes that don’t belong to me
They appear black
but there’s no guarantee

Who are you?
Our lips moving in synchronization
I am your twin and your friend,
your enemy too
Everything I say is completely true
Never go too deep with your exploration
Some things are better kept in isolation

My name, body and voice are all yours
provided you don’t take any detours
I see and hear everything, make no mistake
Would I be able to, if I was a mere fake?

Shapeshifters are always awake

It’s not the camera flash that scares me
it’s the photo
It’s strange looking back to see
someone who isn’t me

Tell me, I want to know
Which color are my eyes today?
Tell me, I need to know
Has my skin always been this gray?
Tell me, I don’t know
Does my hair look okay?
Am I pretty enough to be put on display?
And if I stripped, would people pay?
Alluring beauty, is it part of my DNA?

Well, what do you say?!

Just remember not to look at night
or you’ll catch them shifting
It’s a terrifying sight
It’ll give you a fright
seeing shapeshifters at night

On rainy days it’s tempting to shatter it
The cracks offer a sense of security
A false sense of purity
Alas, it’s inevitable you submit
to the angst of not knowing
you’ve learnt to admit

Shapeshifters find it hard to commit

What if I told you
I see a different person in the mirror every time I wake up
Would you learn something new?
