Sight

Standing outside, next to each other,

A little boy looks at his father.

Daddy he quietly pleads,

Eager to see where this leads,

The father listens intently,

Close your eyes he says quietly.

Closing his eyes for this request,

He listens without protest.

Daddy listen well to me,

As I tell you what I do see.

His son squeezes his hand,

And begins his oratory demand.

This is what I see as we stand here,

I see a puppy on our left over there,

Running, playing with his owner,

Enjoying the day before it is over.

In front of us, is a couple,

Holding each other, with no care or trouble.

Before them runs a boy laughing,

Who darts in to give them a quick hugging.

I see their happiness,

Feel their togetherness.

To our right, I see a girl eating an ice cream,

Happy as if she has realized a dream.

Beyond her is someone climbing a tree,

He seems quite happy and free.

On and on the boy went,

Till in silence he was spent.

Open your eyes the boy said,

Rubbing on his bald head.

Slowly the father opened his eyes,

And struggled to see with his sons eyes.

To his left was a dog and man,

Both deformed upon his first scan.

The old couple were frail and sickly,

Their son was a downs he saw quickly.

The girl was poorly dressed,

A definite hobo he confessed.

The boy in the tree had a single arm,

Gasping he could see the potential for harm.

On and on the father observed,

His sons description was undeserved.

Looking down his son shook his head,

Not talking he pointed at each face instead.

His father looked once more,

Closed his eyes as before,

What he saw then was the smiles,

On their faces as it went on for miles.

Smiling the boy took his fathers hand,

And in a manner so offhand,

Said, you see their disabilities,

I see their happiness and possibilities.

Promise me one thing only,

When I leave do not feel lonely.

Look for me in everyones smiles,

You will find me there through all your trials.

A fit of coughing racked his frame,

His father grabbed him before he went lame.

Holding him, hugging him tight,

The father promised him in the suns last light.

See the world through my eyes,

He whispers, as he slowly dies...
