Six Million

Six Million

Six million gentle souls were lost, when mad men had their way;

And just because of the God they chose, with their lives, they had to pay!

I think the ones most lucky, if I dare may call it that;

Were the ones that died real quickly, to a machine guns’ “Rat A Tat Tat”!

But then there were the others, all herded into cars;

Like cattle to their slaughter, no food, no drink, no stars!

Then arriving at the “death camps”, and forming into groups;

As “monsters” looked them over, then motioned to their troops!

Half were sent to showers that poured in liquid gas;

The doors were locked, they breathed the air, the gasps that were their last!

The other half were all marched off, their heads shorn, and given clothes of rags;

Then shoved into some barren barracks, the Nazis called “stalags”!

The parents and their children; had been separated fast;

To never know each other’s fate, or how long they all would last!

Each day they assigned them details, to work from dawn to dusk;

With little water and scraps of food, a kernel or a husk!

And if their bodies weakened, then gave out, and could not do their chores;

The soldiers would daily shoot them, for they were not needed anymore!

The strongest ones subsisted, but withered to the bones;

Some found their ways to contraband, and ate it all alone!

Finally, there came a reckoning, as Germany would fall;

The Commandants went scurrying, they knew their deaths were now on call!

The very few survivors were let out of the gates!

Like emaciated scarecrows, they searched for their dear mates!

And many troops that saw them, would take one look and retch;

How could other humans do this, to prisoners that they’d catch?

And outside the fences of the “death camps”, were pits with bodies high;

And inside were the crematoriums; that made the soldiers cry!

Then the lucky ones all gathered, for good meals, baths and clothes;

And decided what their plans would be, and then many of them chose!

To head out to the “Promised Land”, the sands of “Yisrael”;

And there to start a life anew, and their stories always tell!

Hi Debs,

Thank you so much for your kind words.  I have been a student of the Holocaust for almost 60 years, and have never been able to believe the atrocities that were inflicted on the Jews by those monsters.  Thank God that most of them were caught and executed, and that to this day, the old ones are still being rounded up.  I'm in the act of writing a few more this week being that it's Holocaust Remembrance Week, and I plan to honor.

Peace and Love,

Hi Larry,

Thank you so much sweetheart for that beautiful heart wrenching piece. You`ve really done the Jewish nation proud with it! and also the right thinking peace loving people of this world a great service by reminding us all of the atrocities that took place during that terrible war and not forgetting the suffering during the first world war too and of course all the wars throughout the world since. We must never stop telling our future generations about all the evil that was perpetrated upon such peace loving and gentle souls who`s love for their fellow man and their love for God is so beautiful.

Have you read the book by Simon Wiesenthal called THE WIESENTHAL FILE? If not I highly recommend it to you. I have read it and it`s a true master piece sweetie, all about his work of finding the perpetrators who were still free and the evil that they did to so many. He spent the rest of his life fighting for justice for the Jewish race and was himself a victim of that evil monster Hitler. Just as you`ve read something truly, sickeningly appalling that took place, there is more detail that is even worse as you read the book.

How some humans can be such barbarian, maniacal, murdering monsters, so evil, cruel and destructive to another is truly incomprehensible and those people who still to this day deny that it ever took place are truly unstable in my opinion, because there are so many witnesses still and so much proof to show otherwise. I really can`t understand their mentality and their lack of respect and heartless disregard for others. Racism is pure evil, after all we are all the same on the inside, we all bleed red blood, I really can`t understand that mentality.

Thank you for that heartbreaking but beautiful piece, you are truly a superbly talented man Larry and this piece is so well written and well thought through and it does you proud sweetie, I am very proud of you and I love your work.

Much love

G xx

Hi Georgina,

I have been following the Holocaust since I was a young man, barely 13 years old.  I was raised in a mixed religious household, my Mother Lutheran and my Father Jewish.  I was one of very few that went to Bible School but  also had a Bar Mitzvah.  For some reason the plight of my Jewish heritage from just 20 or less years before haunted me.  I've not read Simon Weisenthals' book, but I have viewed so many specials on the story of his life, that I feel I know exactly how he suffered and can empathize with his lifelong quest.  I just sent a note to Cherie this morning where I told her that I opened this mornings paper and saw some American school children paying homage to the Jews and the Holocaust, and donning the same apparel that they were forced to wear, with the word "Juden" stitched across.  Your words are truly moving and as usual I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I've already started writing a follow-up poem for, this is Holocaust Remembrance Week and my fingers quiver for a pen to honor it.

Hugs, Peace and Love,

This is a coincidence.  I just ordered 2 books earlier today before I saw this poem.  One by Corrie Ten Boom  The Hiding Place and another one about the Ravenbruck Concentration Camp.  Your poem honors those who suffered so and they will not be forgotten.  We must never forget the evil man can carry out, and we should stand firm none should suffer this way.

Hi Shirley,

Thank you for your kind comments.  Yes, the world must never forget the horrors of the Holocaust.  It's amazing to me, that there are people in the world that claim it never happened, but I think in the back of their minds, they know the truth.  I don't know if you saw, but I posted another poem today about the life of Simon Wiesanthal, called "Simon Says".  I think you would enjoy reading that one too.

Shalom. Peace and Love,
