Sleep paralysis

Sleep paralysis

Lambent light in shards are cast,
Thoughts astray in feverish realm,
My tainted vessel I possess is pinned,
Motionless I succumb to some horror at the helm.

Wide eyed in wonder I whimper and exhale,
Insane I try in vain to move,
Ripped from me is my sheer right to prevail,
I delve deeper into the mattresses groove.

Some intense sense of something ghastly draws close,
Only tears streaming in fear are free,
It invades as I lay once unapposed,
Momentarily Incarcerated, it takes over me.

Pins and needles mask my being,
Skin flush in panic and manic of thought,
I suddenly turn and recoil in seeing,
A monstrous image soon to abort.

I lay in bed in dread to dream,
Confusion and doubt weigh in to my mind,
For a second or two all was not how it seems,
And yet I am no longer tired I'm soon to find.

Excellent as always Simon! For me it's a supernatural phenomenon recurring since youth. It's a pity neuroscience holds no intuition.

I myself have experienced this horrible condition and I too feel it is a supernatural experience. more than just being trapped in layers of sleep
I felt like I was being held down and couldn't breathe... it is however you view it a horrifying experience when you first don't have a clue what is happening..
this is very well written and engaging.. Great write and provokes thought..

I experience sleep paralysis and I would’ve argued till I was blue in the face if you tried to tell me what I experienced wasn’t real and caused by a demon. It seems so real as it happens within the first moments of falling asleep or just when you’re about to wake up. For me it’s in the first stage of falling asleep. When it first happened it felt like something crawled in behind me and started sucking My ear but then it turned violent and I was telling myself wake up Renée....wait you can’t tell yourself to wake up in a dream....wait you can’t tell yourself you’re dreaming! Shit! This is real! I could barely move and I did everything I could to jar myself awake. When I came to I thought holy shit this was just a Dream. So I stayed awake for 30 minutes had a smoke watched a bit of tv and I should be fine. I laid back down and I couldn’t even count to 3 and bam it was on top of me again. Mother f***er this is real. I jarred myself awake grabbed my keys, smokes and slipped on my shoes and walked down the hallway of the hotel where I worked and lived at the time and thought, “wait a minute who am I going to tell? If someone said what I’m about to say to me, I’d be like what kind of drugs are you doing?” For years I never knew what was happening to me and then I saw this documentary about this condition. I was stunned. I also found out it was most likely hereditary. Low and behold on my moms side a lot of us had the same experiences. I really still think sometimes we are being attacked by something not of this earth. Great write by the way!

oh and I forgot to say that when someone’s brain is looked at when they’re awake there’s certain areas that are lit up compared to when they are having a deep sleep (r.e.m.’s) when people are having a sleep paralysis happen to them the parts of their brain that are lit up are the same parts as when they are awake. Food for thought!
