somewhere A baby was crying

somewhere A baby was crying

Somewhere a baby was crying.
The soldier heard the child
it was left in the aftermath
of the refugees.
They were repelled at the border.
No one wanted them anywhere.
The child was left in some bushes.
It was so small so helpless.
His thoughts went to his children at home.
Well-fed warm and safe in their beds.
He put down his weapons
and picked up the innocent child.
Its lips seeking a breast for sustenance
on his fatigues
he cuddled the little one.
I will take care of you he whispered.
And turning to the safety of the camp.
he took the child with him.
For the first time in years
tears fell down his face.
and the hopelessness of all wars
poured out of his heart.
