Spirits of the wood ??

Amongst the hushed darkness
Of the old oak tree
A parliament of barn owls dwell
In a hollow at the summitΒ
Of an entwined stump
How many I can not tell
Creeping in this wooded copse
I hide there patiently
Daring not to scare a single bird
I gaze in awe silently
Alike shadows up above
A pair of barn owls glide
Hauntingly eerieΒ
As I hold my breath, mouth wide
Following each other
These adults swoop inflight
Neither seem to see me
As the leader does alight
From the hole within the tree stump
One by one they give me a thrill
Such a magical vision
With a ghostly spooky chill
He is surely the male
Slightly larger than his friend
Both of these beauties
Have baby owlets they do tend
I have heard squeaky screeches
So I know that they are there
Though I cannot see them
No matter how hard I stare
Such an attentive pair of parents
Hunting in the dead of night
The most remarkable of barn owls
Spirits of the wood in flight
