Spirits of the wood 🦉🦉
Amongst the hushed darkness
of the old oak tree
Lies creatures of magical curiousity
In a hollow of an entwined stump
A parliament of bashful barn owls dwell
I have watched them come and go but how many there is well I can not tell
Creeping in this wooded copse
I hide there patiently
Daring not to scare a single bird
I gaze in awe silently
Silhoutted shadows up above
A pair of barn owls glide
Hauntingly eerie
As I hold my breath, mouth wide
Following each other nose to tail
these adults swoop inflight
Neither seem to see me
As the leader does alight
From the hole within the tree stump
One by one they give me a thrill
Such a mysterious vision of the night amidst a ghostly spooky chill
He is surely the male
Slightly larger than his friend
Both of these beautiful birds
have baby owlets they need to tend
I have heard squeaky screeches
so I know that they are there
Though I cannot see them
no matter how hard I stare
Such an attentive pair of parents
hunting in the dead of night
The most remarkable of birds of pret
Spirits of the wood in flight
