Poem -

Struck

You walk a narrow road.
So narrow, you’re slowly forgetting how to walk.
You tell yourself
One foot in front of the other.
One foot.
In front.
Of the other.
A stranger joins you.
The road becomes narrower
You feel as though you’re walking a tight rope
One wrong move
It’s Over
Breath. You’re struggling for breath.
Your hands clasp your throat
Desperately trying to relieve pressure
It’s no use.
This struggle doesn’t come from your throat
It comes from your brain
Fight or flight
Fight
Or
Flight
Neither
Panic.
Irrational thinking
Oxygen deprivation
Surrender.
You let the feeling overwhelm you
Shaking you
Until there’s barely anything left to be shaken.
The stranger has carried on
Oblivious.
The road is wider now
Breathe
You can breathe
Sigh
Relief
It’s over.
