Sudden Cognizance

Sudden Cognizance

I can't run away;
I swear I've tried.
My exhausted lungs, a price they pay
struggling with every broken stride.

Bones to the point of crumbling
Skull to the point of wanting to burst
I still try, pushing and stumbling
panting with undying thirst.

But I went, and made myself sprint.
That's when I fell
and saw before what I didn't.
I was relieved of my temporary hell.

It has never really crossed my mind
until now; now I understand
That my fleeing was malign
with the same effects as thrashing in quicksand.

Give yourself a break
pick a flower, smell the rose.
Tear away all the stinging ache
that on your spirit, you impose.
