Superficial Societies
Inspired By Banksy's ' Mobile Lovers' ( See Poem Image)

Narcissists display
their fashion accessories
like peacocks. They clutch
their latest smart phones, as if
they were blessed relics,
or sacred rosary beads.
Instant access to
many possibilities,
yet the distance grows
between us daily. Why do
we close ourselves off
and ignore the vast wastelands
of the heart and soul?
In this digital age, Time
and Space have become
severely distorted. There
Is no still centre.
We never seem to notice
significant signs,
like the writing on the wall.
While we worship at
great cathedrals of commerce,
fragile wings of Love
are crushed by cold steel and glass.
Planned obsolescence:
the hallmark of new designs.
Sorrows are hidden.
Reality is airbrushed
out of this cut-price,
disposable existence.
These rampant machines
always swallow our money.
Sordid debris of
an anorexic culture
as scattered across
the catwalks of our dreaming.
If there was only
something tender between us
other than these masks.
Text prompted interruptions:
we don't listen to
one another anymore.
What happened to warm
communion under stars?
Amidst this garish
neon glow, there are way too
many distractions.
Everything human is now
Dissolving from your
once beautiful countenance.
These golden idols
have replaced wise, ancient gods.
