The American Dream

The American Dream

The American Dream,
Is the perfect children,
2.5 to be exact.
It’s a college degree,
And the perfect house.

The American Dream
Is the perfect friends,
Who live next door.
Nice shiny things,
From ceiling to floor.

The American Dream
Is perfection,
Nothing out of place.
It’s all trying to achieve happiness.
What if actually,
The American Dream,
Is different than we think?

Could it be,
That the American Dream,
Is finishing high school?
Not dropping out?
Or is it not getting pregnant,
Before you’re eighteen?

Maybe the American Dream,
Is not getting arrested
For drugs,
Or prostitution,
For breaking things,
Or vandalism.

What if the American Dream
Is loving yourself?
Not committing suicide?
Or turning to porn?
Because you don’t know,
How perfect you are?

Is the American Dream
Really the same?
Is it trying to achieve perfection?
Or is it now,
Just trying to survive and find happiness?
