THE AMETHYST HEART

THE AMETHYST HEARTĀ
in the common room you see the ashtrays yawning
on dented oak, old tables crafted by ghosts that drank Bourbon
and the faint scent of impenetrable malaise
cut with the finest hope.
an undone mirror hangs from a nail in a plank of a load bearing wall
of velvet paintings of poker dogs-Ā
wagering that good tasteĀ
may surrender to apathy; jaundiced with yellow stains
that brown the shadows castĀ
by ordinary candles
doing a sacred work
with your clay.
when you walk inā¦. all this is apparent
but your senses are thwarted by a deluge
of forgotten; Remembered.
you join clouds with ants and strike a bargain
with an absolute reflection.
you hypnotize the shark
in your terrarium
with an amethyst-
Heart.
II
and the more you persist, you allude.
