~The Beach~

~The Beach~

They stood together scared and brave,
In view of bodies heaped and maim,
Yet they stormed the sands of mass in grave,
Midst a hail of bullets and slain.

A flicker of light of shots in fire,
Weeping men courageous and bold,
Moving forward lost and dire,
Hell on earth, dark and cold.

Crawling, clasping through blood and sand,
Faces down in prayer and thought,
Venturing through no man’s land,
Relentless billows of fire and wrought.

The longest day came to close at last,
Abundant lost for our young and free,
A glimmer of light through darkness cast,
I and all will remember thee.
