Poem -

~The Beast Within~

Man's inhumanity to his own species

And perhaps more dreadful the power

Of the human mind to create a tailor made Hell for its owner

Can't thou not minister to a mind diseased

Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow

Raze out the written troubles of the brain

And with some sweet oblivious antidote

Cleanse the stuffed bosom of that perilous stuff which weighs upon the heart?

I have studied my own ash-gray eyes

In the glass and see the resignation

And the melancholy within their depths

They are ringed by the dark shadows

That come from many sleepless nights

My path leads me down a deserted road

Cloaked in the wavering pale shadows

Cruelties are of the spirit

Rather than the torture chamber

And therefore all the more dreadful

Silence weighs on me like a tombstone

Time and time again I have yearned

To lift its crushing weight from my conscience

Crimson in the pale shadows of dawn

My nightmares never go away

The greatest enemy we have to fear

Is the beast within, the savage lurking

In every human breast.
