The Bold

You will never cup a dragonfly.Â
The first to break free,Â
Or the first to die,
And if there’s something you can't teach,
It’s how to put one on a leash—
So you might try,
But keep trying still—
You’ll never cup one, you never will.Â
They are creatures far too dignified
To be imprisoned or confined,
A living rainbow, flitting as vibrantly,
As the self you murdered
In conformity.Â
Kaleidoscope eyes see in the every degree,
Glass panels reflecting your hypocrisy—
Celestial minions of truth to assail
Your reputation.Â
A neon comet about your ear,
Silver wings grazing every fear,
That maybe they know too much
That maybe the thoughts you left untouched,
They reveal in their buzzing song,
Because—
To know you for you is to know you all wrong.
As far as society is concerned.
You’ll want to kill them,
And you can!
From envy
You understand?
But there is liberty in defiant death
A dragonfly can never be your pet—
Submission is not in their vocabulary.
Tame them never, never do what they’re told,
And freedom comes in being bold!Â
So you can kill them,
You can try!
But you will never cup a dragonfly.Â
It’s caracas will haunt you,
Won’t be silenced still—
You will never cup one.
You never will.
