The Brave

The Brave
Lying under a blanketed star lit sky
Wondering if or when it's our turn to die
So cold covered in wet thick dirt
Limbs numb no more do they hurt
Thoughts turn to my loved ones awaiting me at home
Then back to the soldiers dying out here all alone
My body shakes with terror and fear
Why oh why are we all lying here?
Waiting for the moon to give way to the sun?
Waiting for bombs and bullets from a gun?
I sip from my flask knowing what lies ahead
Up up and over running through the injured and dead
The smell of acrid smoke lingering in the air
Sounds from the dying follow me everywhereÂ
The sun is rising oh god it's daylight
Now it's my turn to stand up and fight
The battlefield is stained crimson red
Sights and sounds fill me with dred
Broken souls lie shattered and silent on the ground
I want to scream but can make no sound
Running and running through rivers of blood and tears
Trying to push away my anxiety and fears
I hear the gunshot something warm in my chest
Please tell my loved ones I did my best
I close my eyes and take one final breath
Joining the soldiers on this battlefield of death
No private funeral or headstone for me
A field of poppies is all you will see
Beautiful flowers now cover our bodies and the battlefieldÂ
SO PLEASE REMEMEBER US AND WHY TO DEATH WE DID YIELD ?
