The City That Never Sleeps

Lauren Dorf’s beautiful poem “City of Dreams”, awakened these memories.
.
Back in the mid 1970’s, New York City was my stomping ground;
I flew in there every two weeks, to the greatest of all towns!
Art dealing was my profession, Sotheby’s and Christies my two main haunts;
I met dealers from around the World, who also made these jaunts!
.
They were all searching for fine paintings, to purchase and take home;
Then sell to their wealthy clients, in London, Brussels, and Rome!
The European market was on fire, voracious collectors Worldwide;
We did business in the daytime, and at night, partied side by side!
.
I knew a well-known actress, who also dealt in art;
She always joined me on these outings, we felt something in our hearts!
We dined at the finest restaurants, and drank very expensive wines;
Then we’d end up at famous discos, mingling with stars dressed to the nines!
.
She knew that I was married, so we kissed, but did not touch;
Yet, I quickly fell in love with her, for we shared so very much!
I was “Torn Between Two Lovers”, but eventually, I did decide;
To call her from Ohio, and end it, as I cried!
.
I’ve often wondered what would have happened, if I had taken the other route;
To move to The Big Apple, and have this dream girl me about!
Would we still have been together, Gallery owners, and much in love;
Or would it have proven to be just infatuation, when push came down to shove?
.
.
Choices from our past
