The Common Wandering Tiger (Monarch Butterfly)

There's something rare that lives right here
and residents keep it hush.
They come in droves just once a year
and theirΒ colors vibrantly lush.
Β
They came up from Baja in Spring,
thousands of migratory miles,
and along with beauty they bring
inquisitive curious smiles.
Β
Their frailty is their demise,
yet they're much stronger than most
and the male is the one that dies,
right after mating on the coast.
Β
They bounce on high in skies galore,
all fluttering among the pines.
Immortalized in the folklore,
where frolickingΒ behavior shines,
Β
Male wingsΒ are larger than his wife's
and their beauty's beyond compare.
They're many and numbers are rife,
and spectacular view aren'tΒ rare.
Β
Their flitting slow and sailing flight
matches no other one alive,
and researchers watch day and night,
hoping that the species survive.
Β
If you travel to Monterey
between the months March and July.
You'll find an abundant array
That's hovering the coastal sky.
