The Day I Made History

The Day I Made History

                     Sixty years ago today

On April nineteenth, 1958, I had a date with destiny;
For that day of my Bar Mitzvah, I made unprecedented history!
I’m going to explain it to you, how it came to be about;
That a boy of only thirteen, could have such amazing clout!
.
It all started a year before that, at our Conservative Synagogue;
Where I was studying in Hebrew, many hours there did I log!
It was optional then from the Torah, to read it or to chant;
My Father wanted me to sing it, on that, he was adamant!
.
So he hired Rabbi Adler, to teach me it’s special notes;
For six months I worked to learn them, with their Ancient sounds remote!
Then some of the Temple Elders, learned my Mother was not a Jew;
They told my Father I needed cleansing, he replied, “Screw the lot of you”!
.
The next day we went to Temple Israel, a Reform Denomination there;
He told Rabbi Selwyn Russlander this tale, and how that we had fared!
His reply came out real quickly, “Let’s do something never done before”;
“He’ll sing the Ancient Chants from the Torah, I could not be happy more”!
.
I still remember when The Scroll was opened, and I sang the olden notes;
I heard the Congregation whispering, as my voice through air did float!
So there I stood immortalized, in the History Books fore’er;
With my Mother and Father beaming, for their Son so very rare!
.
.
                              I sang the Torah
                 Like no one else had e’er done
                            Honor my Parents
