The Deep Mine Day Shift

The Deep Mine Day Shift

Give your lamp token to the man, before entering the cage
The lucky begger's close,to retiring age
Shuffle down the cage,to let your mates in
The shutter comes down, the decent bell's ring
Feel a jolt,as you go down in the lift
Ready to start, your eight hour day shift
You get to the bottom, the shutter comes up
Your jobs board for your gate, have a quick look
You get on the paddy,it goes a fast pace
To take you to your job place,on the Harworth coal face
The coal used to be mined, with a pick and shovel
That took blood sweat and tears and way too much trouble
Mechanisation replaced tackle and blocks
In Harworth's modern mine,it was hydraulic chocks
They stood side by side, right down the coal face
Adding vertical pressure,to hold the roof in place
A big cutter goes round, carving out coal
On to the conveyor,to the loading hold
A very dusty job,is cutting the coal
Beat the next shifts tonnage, that is your goal
Your hot filthy and sticky and ready for a shower
You look at your clock, just another hour
Getting ready for your pickup, you start heading out
The paddy takes an hour,I'd say, just about
Then its up in the cage,to the pit top
Showered and changed, you don't want to stop
Get on your bike and pedal so fast
Through your front door, relax, home at last
