The Flutter

I heard a flutter within me
An intruder, I ask it to leave
In response, it grows, his prescence a trigger
I realize I must fight
I have trained my mind for this moment
I command my eyes to avert, however, they are glued by the enemy
Disappointed but determined
I look to my mouth now to help me
All that comes out is a jumble as my tongue loses the ability to create words
Frustrated, I move to my stomach, the acidity its signature defense
To my surprise, the acid army has been ambushed by butterflies
Surely my legs will serve me well, this now my battle cry
Although they too fail me as they shake, my knees locking
I’m beginning to panic, maybe it’s time to take flight
I desperately beg my feet to run from this
They refuse, my army is disloyal
I count on my final line of defense, an undefeated and decorated war hero
My heart, my brave soldier
Falls, weak as he surrenders
I have no choice now, I must concede
A loser in the war of love
I let it overtake me
