Ultimate betrayal

Ultimate betrayal

They did not beg for freedom
they fought for it instead,
to history's closet
it is confined
you heard the glory
from our side
yet what got lost
in the spoils
was ultimate betrayal.
There was no greater ally
in the deadly art of war,
through Monte Cassino
and the skies
through gulags and ghettos
they never faltered
yet all on offer
in the end
was ultimate betrayal.
They did not fight for glory
only for fallen homeland,
their passion was
what carried each day
in plane or tank
their valour abound
yet what lingers
lest we forget
is ultimate betrayal.
They did not lust for conquest
as victors carved the spoils,
instead they felt
that Judas kiss
through Warsaw, Krakow
and all around
in chains of red
they rose again
from ultimate betrayal.
