The Hard Road
When I was haunted by your memory long ago
I walked
a road that was hardened by autumn
And tramped down by my walking
Closed in mind and opened by
a softened heart
Breached, engaged
A war was waged
Like Vanguards we raged
Until we stilled and I fell asleep walking
into my barracks/bedroom
Energy drink cans on theΒ table
Night-time cough syrup on the night stand
Herbal teas,
Tylenol, my quicksandΒ
lies in the bathroom where there's an 80-proof
on standby
Hours in the glassΒ
How misspent as memories pass
Always reaching critical mass
I can't love you any more

Tons of thanks Tony! Your feedback is invaluable and you know just what I'm getting at. Yes, loneliness and sad memories can really do a number on the mind, heart and spirit. But, there is always hope. Always a chance to turn things around and walk on without tramping or stomping. High five, brother poet!
awesome imagery and almost a nostalgia about the piece. I love the last paragraph it made me very sad.
Thank you so much Lisa! Yes there was some inspiration from the Second World War, as I mentioned the Vanguard fighter planes. Because of my deep, deep feelings for her at the time, it felt like a real battle when I thought of her after she was gone. It is sad, but like I said to Tony, there is always that hope and that chance. Thanks again for your feedback!
