The Importance Of Being.......
The words I want to say
words I knew so well,
now just a fog in my brain..
Where did those words go?
Panic rising..
Hands inelegantly sweaty..
Tongue affixed firmly to the roof of my mouth.
My clothes feel alien .. not me at all
so strange!…
I hear a bell ringing…Oh my God!
Why is there a buzzing in my head?
All I hear is fuzzy buzzing.
Soon I know I will need to speak,
need to walk that walk
into the light….
Breathing now more rapidly,
almost hyperventilating….
Remember, remember, what I was told-
How to control these wild feelings…
Slow down breathing,…..
Slow down…..
Deep intake of breath ..hold for a count of 4
breathe out slowly for a count of eight…
And repeat.
Heartbeat now slower, start to yawn
A good sign….
For me at least
Tongue released finally and mouth more mobile
Buzzing stopped and just the sound of distant male voices
Conversing
Like a light being switched off I ….am now
gone!
And in my place an aristocratic Lady Bracknell
Strides on
confident…professional!
The gentlest of audience applause ,
Thank you family!
and words that were a moment ago lost
now tumble effortlessly from my lips.
Words put there by Oscar..the Master.
I hope I do them justice in their Importance.

Great subject Lodi! that fear before stepping out on the stage is such a palpable thing- you describe it beautifully- loved this

Attending as many poetry slams as I do, and reading before live audiences in coffee houses all over the Cincinnati tri-state area, I completely get where you're coming from, Lodigiana.
I practice memorizing the poem(s) I'm going to read that evening for hours and hours in front of friends and family who're willing to help me out.
I feel it makes more of an impact on the listeners when you need no notes to recite and act-out your poetry.
Yet after all that practicing I've still been known to forget a line or two due to stage fright. When that happens I usually improvise by skipping the lines and continuing on as if I forgot nothing.
Does the audience know?
Probably, sometimes.
The fact remains that I know and it's embarrassing, lol.
Nicely penned!

Hi Dean ..I know just where you are coming from! when I was younger I prided myself on never needing a prompt -plus I also learned everyone elses lines!..now though I have far less confidence in myself and have cut back on the acting for fear of blanking. I now concentrate more on singing..which I have no problem with- so far!!! have you ever recorded your readings and played them on Cosmo? I am sure we would all love to hear them!
