The Jitterbug Kids

The Jitterbug Kids

Starting in nineteen fifty-seven, while in the seventh grade;
My Jewish friends had their Mitzvahs, sacred prayers and chants we made!
Most of us had parties, on that same day’s Saturday night;
With a DJ or a live band, the music was out of sight!
.
Rock and Roll was all the rage then, Bill Haley and Elvis P;
We would jitterbug the night away, young bods as lithe as they could be!
It was easy to find a partner, all us kids knew how to dance;
And we were very very single, far too young for true romance!
.
My own was April of fifty-eight, forty kids invited to my bash;
A great DJ played the records, to the floor, we all did dash!
We had moves I only dream of, now sixty-one years in the past;
Oh, to still be at these parties dancing, but good things never last!
.
.
Young teens we danced
Jitterbug was all the rage
To be young again

Dear Larry, loved this poem.  My Grandmother on my mothers side could jitterbug.  My family loved dancing and it is one of my fondest memories.  My oldest son's dad said his mitzvahs's was great.  Momma would go on and on about it and point to that big picture that took up the whole wall practically.  He hated it...it was so funny!  Love, Terry Kay

My Dear Terry,

I was brought up with dancing as part of our lives.  My mother was a professional tap dancer, and toured in the east with her younger sister, their stage name being, "The Dawn Sisters".  My father was also a great dancer, and they won contests for the Rumba and Mambo.  So when you say your grandmother could jitterbug, I know just what you mean, because that generation was ensconced in swing music.  Also, I had one of those large Mitzvah photographs of me, that hung in our house, that I wasn't that crazy about either.

Love,
Larry xxx
