The lanterns in the trees

The lanterns in the trees startle meĀ
So I become curiously acutely aware of them
They are so good to look at
The red of the lanterns mix with the green of the trees
I want them to explode into existence
I want them blowing in the wind
Each one a little spirit

I imagine China and so many lanterns everywhere
On the boardwalk today by the river

I take the crucifix from around your neckĀ
