The Lost and Brave...

The Lost and Brave...

The Lost and Brave...

Young boys, only few became men,
Death was imminent, tears were shed,
War, the source of our suffering days,
Bless them, they were our lost and brave.

Out in the cold wind, wanting their mam,
In the trenches at night, praying for dad,
Writing a letter home, speaking of their own fear,
Wishing war to be over and have a loved one so near.

A weapon forced upon the young, to shed blood,
A hand grenade within a fist, I've never understood,
Shaking fingers, too cold to light up a cigarette,
Wanting to live and breathe without any regrets.

Young boys, only few became men,
Death was imminent, tears were shed,
War, the source of our suffering days,
Bless them, they were our lost and brave.

Now I'm getting older, I know my innocence was sold,
My friends were shot, I fought like I was a lone ghost,
I still live, but sadly I'm not the man I thought I was going to be,
On blades of grass I come and visit, but war killed my childhood dreams.

So I write to you now son, it's your choice and I support your decision,
As a parent, I know you're scared, but please, remember your mission,
Be brave, if not, that's ok, just find your way and get home safe,
We are here to love you, me and mam will shelter your pain,
Please,
Don't feel lost,
Just get home safe...

The tragedy of war is that those that survive and are, rightly, proud of thier deeds are cursed to see their offspring proudly go and do the same. Whenever it suits those who would profit.
The pride remains as does the memory of the terror of the truth of it as they go off to do the same. Warriors are a different breed. I have never been one but many in my family have.
I think all of them would thank you for this excellent piece. Brilliant Wayne.
Your mate,
Nigel.

WOW! Thank you sir..
yeah, off to battle they go, on and on the likelihood of the family tree, I'm sure the father wouldn't want it for their son, but unfortunately the choice is not theirs, it's the one who's going to war, a very strong emotion I tried to tackle here, I hope I did it a little justice, thanks for your excellent comment, poet brother! ?????
