The Pacific

We just finished watching a ten-part mini-series, on the network HBO;
About our Marines in the early 1940’s, who on dangerous missions had to go!
It was directed by Steven Spielberg, “The Pacific” it is called;
Following the lives of several brave men, and their buddies, who would fall!
.
After meeting up in boot camp, and their basic training complete;
They were deployed to Pacific islands, the Japs there to defeat!
One by one, they took them, but the price was very steep;
Many sacrificed their precious lives, only dog tags, their loved ones keep!
.
The photography was phenomenal, one feeling like you were there;
Some scenes so very graphic, lost Souls so hard to bear!
Very few of the enemy surrendered, “Bushido” says give your life;
And if you dishonor your ancient ancestors, commit “Seppuku” with your knife!
.
But finally, the war was ended, when two Atomic Bombs we dropped;
The Japanese waved the white flag, the killing at last stopped!
The survivors then returned home, married, and had long careers;
But the memories of the atrocities, oft times would bring them tears!
.
.
Two nations at war
Countless lost lives the result
No one’s victory
P.S. At the series end, they showed many of the actors with photographs of the soldiers they portrayed, and a brief bio of their lives after the war ended. Some of them, having enlisted as teenagers, are still alive today. These beautiful stories, brought many tears to Linda’s and my eyes.
