The Rose of New York

Encompassed in a concrete enclave
Choking fumes swirl all around;
Tall shadows steal the sunlight,
Still,it firmly stands its ground.
Β
What little light it does receive
Are of colours red, amber and green,
And often at night, neon pink
Or brilliant scarlet can be seen.
Β
As each of the seasons change
From Spring to Summer to Fall,
Its lovely silken pink petals
Appear ever beautiful to all.
Β
Alas, the biting, bitter chill
Of winterβs hostile breath
Blows on the rose for days
Sending other roses to their death.
Β
Yet, this pink rose of New York
Endures all that comes its way
As a little girl goes to school
She gently touches it each day.
Β
Love flows to that flower
From her fingers so kind and soft
Thus, it blooms for her daily
And her heart is raised aloft.
