~ The Somnambulist's Test ~
My thoughts, ancillary to my mind's bidding
Its ineffable state, in conference with the universal,
Does somehow express that which I could not comprehend
And yet, there they are, my thoughts
Quite well conveyed, in the form of poetry and prose
Staring back at me, smiling, with no regrets,
Am I the Somnambulist? I could be, I suppose,
But then, to what end?...
Shall I drink of poison, and then upon waking
Discern that I am indeed, the dreamer
As my ego does the sleepwalking,
And through all of this, is being put to the test
While having no regrets
For murdering
His other self?...
Or, the poison itself, placed back on the shelf
That my alter-ego might drink of it
Inside another dream perhaps,
Where being apotropaic
Requires great stealth,
And the wherewithal
To abide this test
While, wide awake,
And well enough
To understand
My mind's bidding,
As,
The Dreamer
Or,
The Somnambulist....

Great poem Tony
very deep and disturbing
but still a great poem
Thanx GREG!!.....yeah I guess it can be a bit disturbing.....but I'm glad you liked anyway!!.....Big Smiles.....T xo : )
Hi Tony, this really delves into that deeper place for me. And I could read this in more than one way. Where we question are our thoughts that spring into poetry. Do they come from our own thinking or are they sourced directly from the universe itself? Are we in some sort of trance like sleepwalking state when we have these epiphanies? Like an instrument just writing what falls out from those in the zone moments.
But I could also read this in questioning if this life is real. Is it a test? A lucid dream. Every time I read this I come up with another meaning. It is rich in content and flexes those thinking muscles beautifully. Like reality and dreams come in many layers, there are many layers to this write. I am going to read this again and no doubt see something else. It is one of those poems you can graze on for days. Fabulous my clever friend x
YAY!! GWENDOLINE!!.....I am always so moved and impressed by your perceptive abilities.....you are the only one to ask about or even mention the "Test" part of this subject matter....and of course it is big part of the foundation of my thoughts when delivering this piece.....I mean the question is really not answerable but it certainly is amazing food for thought and thoroughly inspiring....the kind of inspiration that can cause one to delve into the potential of changing the world itself!!....Many, many, inventions that helped to shape this world have come from dreams.....you my friend.....are on the right path....thanx so much for this lovely commentary dear poet sister!!......Rock On!!......T xo : )
God Almighty, Tony,
How I have missed burying myself in the brilliance of your beautiful prose. The funny thing is that right after doing this comment, we are posting a poem I wrote that kind of borders on the same route to escape reality. You always challenge my practice of etymology, today's word being "apotropaic", which I had to look up in my Webster's. As usual, bravo to my brilliant guru.
Love you Bro,

Wow Tony! This really does make one think profoundly about the reality or otherwise of our lives...is what we experience right now..Really right now? ..or was it a memory or even a dream..or maybe still is!..rereading this again and again and each time I feel differently..a great write my friend and one that certainly makes the reader think! Well done my brother poet! All good things being sent to you as always.Lodi xxx
Hi LODI !!...as always your comments bring me great joy at how you interpret and appreciate the poetic......and in this instance delve into the potential and possibilities of the subject matter....and of course this is pretty extreme subject matter.....but the kind of stuff I like to write about....so thanx tons for these lovely words dear poet sister.....and All Good Things back at ya!!......smiles.....T xo : )
You know ... I used to wonder when I watched the dementia patients completely immersed in their own realities whether I myself was in fact sitting in a nursing home somewhere... thinking I was in work. What is reality Tony?? Great write as always x
wow Tony, I envy your ability to capture introspection in words ! your talent is awesome!............................................................................................Jim
