THE SPIRIT OF YESTERDAY

DO THE CLOCK ROLL BACKWARDS,
HAS YESTERDAY EVER RETURNED
FROM ITS PERISHABLE HOURS
TO SHOW ITS FACE AGAIN UNDER THE SUN.

YESTERDAY IS BUT A GHOST
IN THE CONFINES OF ONE’S MIND,
AN ABSTRACT, AND BLURRED IMAGE,
THAT ONCE WAS.

SO MUST YOUR FAILURES OF YESTERDAY BE,
LIKE THE WIND THAT GRACED THE FACE
OF A MOTORCYCLIST ON A LONG JOURNEY,
LEFT BEHIND, NEVER TO KISS HIS CHEEKS AGAIN.

ONE’S LIFE MUST NOT BE LIVED
IN THE SHADOW OF YESTERDAY,
OBSTRUCTING THE GUIDING LIGHT OF TODAY.

NO ONE CAN REACH BACK IN TIME
AND GRAB THE HORNS OF YESTERDAY,
FOR THE SPIRIT OF YESTERDAY
HAS DIED IN THE NIGHT,
AND SO MUST YOUR FAILURES OF THE PAST.

WILFORD BARKER.
