THE WISHING TREE

Who was it swung the mighty axe
That felled the wishing tree
Causing leaves of hope to flutter
The birds of love to flee

Who chopped it up for firewood
And carried it on home
No shade now for the needful ones
The weeping sky exposed

Shrivelled in the naked sun
Froze in icy cold
Who was it that so rudely killed
And strangled dreams
Then hope

Who would be so bold
