The World listened...
But it didn't hear
Warning fell on deafened ear
Selfish need outweighing fear
Status now the prize most dear
Ignorant
To what is near.
The World looked...
But it didn't see
Beyond it's own impunity
Life erasing empathy
Hardened to the misery
The fires, floods
The barren sea.
The World taught...
But it didn't learn
Flames of envy made us burn
Fear we'd somehow miss our turn
Fed anger's never ending churn
Thoughts consumed
With all we yearn.
The World dreamt...
But it didn't wake
Would not see what it must take
The difference it could make
For all of mankind's sake
Just habits
It should break.
The World ended...
It said it tried
Stupid people stole and lied
Preening Peacocks puffed with pride
All drowned beneath the rising tide
No one cared
It died.

Thanks so much. I heard someone, the German environmental minister I think, say the title of my poem and it's resonated since, so I had to write this, if only to get the phrase out of my head 😏. It's a subject I feel very strongly about and I'm genuinely scared for our planet.
