The young man and the German Shepherd

The young man and the German Shepherd

It is always said that a dog is man's best friend.
And, I like to believe that this is true.
I want to tell you the story of a young man and his dog named Sam.
This dog, a German Shepherd, was a baby when the young man picked him up.
Under his coat hid him from the cold, and on his little motorcycle took him away.
In his new home, Sam quickly found his feet among the other inhabitants.
He likely became a favorite of the masters, as he was loyal, kind, and a good guardian when needed. The young man later met a young woman and Sam accepted her.
She too became his friend for life.
The lovebirds left the nest to build their own but Sam didn't come with them right away.
Yet he liked to escape on the roads and cross the city to visit them.
Sam was a smart dog and knew it was mistake. So when his friend, the young man's future wife, opened the door and saw him, Sam his paws over his eyes as a sign of apology.
But, he loved them too much and wanted to stay with them.
That's why a few months later, at the lovebirds' wedding, Sam was one of the guests of honor, because he was a real member of the family.
Months passed, and the little trio was happy.
Then, one day, Sam saw the woman's belly grow and over the weeks, become more and more round. So he put his big nose on it to feel what was at the bottom. And it was me. He felt me.
For him, it had become a ritual to lay his head on the young woman's stomach, until that evening in May when she went to the hospital. The young man brought Sam some newborn clothes for him to sniff the scent and he couldn't contain his joy and emotions.
When the young woman came home with the baby, Sam was guarding the basket and the baby and no one was to come near.
Lying beside me, he watched me when I slept and gently put his paw on my belly when I dreamed. Months passed and the baby grew and learned to walk. Sam always stayed by her side.
But, the kind shepherd was getting old now.
So the young man installed him comfortably in a room of the house, out of sight and in peace.
It was then that one evening in August, when the Princess of Hearts tragically passed away, that Sam fell asleep in the arms of the young man peacefully under the tears of the young couple.
They lost their best friend that night, but his memory is still there.
The photos and memories of the young man are still present and vivid.
And that's how I know that this dog was and remains my guardian angel, and thanks to this dog, the most kind and affectionate of big dogs, I chose his name to write stories.

You may not believe me but your words made me cry. I know from your words that you understand and appreciate the deep almost mystical bonds that evolve between human and animal...especially dogs. I had a Sam too...my beautiful shepherd Amber...also my soulmate x
