they came they

they came they came
and nobody wanted them
they drowned they drowned
everyone mourned them
time went on and statues were erected of them
and books and films created all about them
the blame the blame of the death of them
was cast out far and wide lest we forget them
the shame the shame of what we did to them
the lesson the lesson we quickly forget
and do it over and over
to embrace the death of them.
them and them

intriguing write, mr kapow, your words open images in my mind of the mistreatment of 'native people' on this continent, driven from their land, imprisoned, slaughtered and then years later having cities and streets and rivers named after them....I also see immigrants who came to this land long ago with the best of intentions only to face racism, poor working conditions violence, for many decades before their contributions were even recognized and appreciated....and I see those who were brought to this continent as slaves, used abused and still face challenges.... 'them and them' also conjure up images of war and soldiers killed in the prime of their lives before given a chance to truly live....your poem implies a lot, not sure entirely or specifically what it's about but nonetheless it is very powerful, layered with implications....a wonderful job of writing, cheers poet
thank you for your kind words about my poem Christopher.
the beauty of poetry is that they can be layered with many meanings and subject.
this poem is about all the things you mentioned and also about the current influx of peoples running away from war in the middle east into europe and also about genocide if peoples past and present
its also about the failings of society in that it never learns compassion for people in strife or the planned inflicted harm on a people and then trys to distance itself from its accountability through media.
im so happy that my poem resonated with you and that you like it.
