The Ugly Side of Life

~~The Ugly Side of Life
For so long, the ugly side of life is all I’ve known.
Very few kindnesses, have I been shown.
After years of seeing meanness I guess I got into my head,
Most people I meet on the street would rather see me dead.
I hope you understand why I feel the way I do,
If you’ve been to where I’ve been,
You might feel that yay too.
In the middle of winter, cold nights are long.
When you sleep on the ground,
You don’t feel much like singing a song.
All my worldly possessions, in my back pack,
Walking from church to church, looking for a snack.
Most people hang together, when they’re on the street,
But I stayed alone, weary of who I meet.
Survival of the fittest, it is no joke,
I’ve had friends die on the street,
I counted five one year, forever gone, like a puff of smoke.
I write for the ones who fell on the street.
I pray that they go to heaven, and become kings,
In society they were looked upon as worthless things,
But they were human beings, just like you, and I,
But they were looked down upon, and spat upon, and left to die.
Alcohol and drugs takes away some of the bite,
When you sleep on the street, on a cold winter night
Give us a home without alcohol,
And watch us flourish instead of fall.
I’ve gotten drunk with them, and joked, and lied,
And some of them just stumbled away and, laid down, and died.
If we just took a small portion
Of what we spend on war,
We could eliminate hunger, and homelessness,
For evermore.
