Unborn Love

The doc flashed me a smile and winked.
So numb I could hardly blink. 
With a simple nod I knew what I had feared was here - 
No more me, I, mine- with my body we were now combined.
A simple smile seemed almost impossible to make. 
But, that all was soon to change!

I heard your heart beat for the first time; 
So overwhelmed I began to cry! 
How selfish had I been?
People wish for this all their lives. 
God had been good to me - 
And all I could do was ask why?

Maybe this was my punishment for my sin, 
Or a mistake that would ruin my life- how foolish had I been!

That magical beating drum, 
Pictures of you sucking your thumb- 
Captivated my soul and moved me in a way 
that I can never feel again.

I was going to have a child, my very own next of kin! 
My dear, I fell in love with you before we ever met.
Before you dared to take your first breath.

It was and is, a love like no other....
The love between a child and mother!
