UNDYING LOVE

She wore it like shackles
A noose round her neck
To wear as a reminder
Keep her happiness in check

The guilt weighed so heavy 
The chains even more
Her hearts’ hidden darkness
Lurked behind a closed door

Such grief that she carried
A sadness; such loss
She wandered her thoughts
Always bearing her cross

Her hands wore the marks
Of a crucified Mother
Bleeding the hurt
Never wanting another

If she’d held her hand tighter?
Had she arrived a little late?
Her sweet little baby
Would not run from that gate

She was smiling; she was happy
She never stood a chance
It was moving too fast
Took her down like a lance

That car will remain 
Forever in her mind
Reliving the nightmare
On constant rewind

A Mother left so burdened
She ached in her gut
Destroyed and so desperate
Life not lived;   in a rut

Of depression; devastation
Circling her mind
All her inner most demons
Were truly unkind

She loved her only child
And needed her so
To nurture and care for
...but she let her hand go

No more would she suffer
No more would she grieve
This home was a shell
That she had to now leave

To join her lone baby
Now take her small hand
To hold her forever
But not in this land

In a place they could share
Dance with stars and the moon
‘Don’t fret my sweet angel
I’ll be with you soon’
