Veni, Vidi, Vici
Inspired by Shirley Rebstock’s powerful  Poem “The War In My Mind”.
For the brave warriors who served our country, and now suffer from PTSD.
.
“Veni, Vidi, Vici”, Julius Caesar’s famous words;
I came, I saw, I conquered, sent to Rome by carrier birds!
The slaughter of opposition, standing in path of Roman rule;
Bow down and now surrender, or be part of our death pool!
.
Fast forward two millenniums, mankind still fighting wars;
Countries still filled with hatred, each other they abhor!
But instead of swords and arrows, artillery now we glean;
To mow down all that oppose us, our mighty “War Machine”!
.
Yet, we also lose our dear friends, the enemy sometimes wins;
Eventually, there comes a white flag, and a period of peace begins!
We come home with lots of medals, pinned upon our saddened chests;
For we cannot forget the faces, of the souls we put to rest!
.
We return to be civilians, but can’t shake the PTSD;
In nightmares we still are fighting, hearing Taps and Revelry!
It’s so hard to now assimilate, when our minds cannot forget;
About the horrors they have witnessed, the atrocities of all War’s debt!

My Dear Friend Jason,
Greeks and Romans fell
Their progeny's battle scars
Inundate their souls

You amaze me how you create great poems so quickly. Â Thank you my friend. I wrote The War On My Mind on Cosmo because originally, I just wrote it in thanks to my cousin's husband, Vincent, to thank him for the stories he sent me about his war experiences. He thanked me for the poem and said he was honored and felt immortalized by it. Â That gave me idea to post as tribute to him and all other soldiers and then I will send it to him and be able to say, " ok, now you are on the internet forever." You have created an even better poem to remind others of the toll on those who defend us. Â Thank you.
My Dear Shirley,
Thank you for your beautiful words, but I don't agree with all of them. Â "You have created an even better poem to remind others of the toll on those who defend us". Â I beg to disagree, because your powerful poem was the inspiration for mine, as were many of the illustrations you used about the effects of PTSD. Â I feel honored that you would say that, but if mine is "just as good" as yours, that would be more than enough for me. Â Thank you again for your great inspiration.
Hugs, Peace and Love,
Larry xxx
