The Pressing Need For Participatory Democracy In The UK

Voting: ( Inspired By Noam Chomsky)

Voting in our current 'democracy'
Is easy. It takes approximately
The same amount of conscious effort as
A lab rat, the subject of many tasks,
Takes to press a lever and obtain a piece
Of cheese. Some may claim, that is overtly
Cynical, and there is much more to it.
Yet it begs the burning question: what is
The point of mass citizenries, who are
Not allowed to play a meaningful part
In decisions that directly affect
Their lives? It seems that all they can expect
Are purely passive roles. O how about
Active participation?! Any clown
Can put a cross, for any candidate.
O it makes me incredibly irate,
When many casually celebrate
This backward system. In their eyes, it's great.
In the UK, it's still 'First Past The Post'.
O some may gloat, but it means that one's vote
Counts for nothing on many occasions;
Leaving people cursing in frustration!
Up and down our 'good, green and pleasant' land,
Not many seem to truly understand,
The slick ways in which we are all spoon fed
Platitudes about equality and
Freedom. When, in fact we are now led
By those who resemble the Walking Dead!
Today's politicians fill me with dread.
It's so hard to get them out of my head.
If we didn't believe the parties' lines,
And were wary of all the warning signs,
We could then scrutinise, vast tapestries
Of lies, in our so-called democracies.
The Elites would like us to keep on watching
Trashy TV with glazed eyes; just sitting
Back with minds filled with futile illusions.
Media plays with puerile emotions.
The false dreams that are sold to us daily,
Just dull our brains. They may make life easy,
But ultimately they cannot hide real
Issues that we must confront. Greedy
Corporate business owners have things sussed.
They are always whipping new notions up,
To create false consciousness. We must break
Out of this strong spell soon, for when we wake
Up one day, from our prolonged sleep, we may
Find that it's too late, and all may be in vain.
