Watch the world go by

I sit and watch
Their busy lives
Zigzag past my eyes
I sit alone
Unobserved
Watch the world go by
A mother with her children
Stress lining her face
A smile long forgotten
Sadness in its place
A pram full of shopping bags
Child sat on her hip
Toddler throwing tantrums
As she tightens up her grip
Teenagers girls chatting
Gather in a crowd
Annoying passers by
Giggling out loud
Youthful boys
In their ignorance
Cursing as they walk
Old friends
Meet by chance
Stop in the street to talk
Old man with a walking stick
With each step a groan
Long suffering wife at his side
Hosts a face of stone
A couple strolling hand in hand
Romance in it’s prime
Besotted by each other
Unaware of time
I sit and watch
Their busy lives
Zigzag past my eyes
Snuggled in a doorway
Keeping warm and dry
Begging for some food
Unseen by their eyes
I sit here all alone
Watch the world go by
