What Time Is It Kids?

The greatest show I ever watched, when I was just a little kid;
Was the famous “Howdy Doody” time; that all children in America also did!
At five p.m. we’d hear the words, “Hey kids, “What time is it?”
Then we’d quickly run to watch TV, and find a place to sit!
Buffalo Bob was the father figure, with Clarabell the Clown;
And kids would be in the “Peanut Gallery”, and their hearts would quickly pound!
Though a lot of our stars were puppets, they seemed so real to us;
“Howdy Doody”, “Mr. Bluster” and “Dilly Dally”, with “Flub A Dub” a must!
All the boys had crushes on a Princess, “Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring” she was called;
But her uncle, big “Chief Thundercloud”, protected her from us all!
This was our children’s soap opera, we never missed a show;
And if we had to, our friends would fill us in, to keep us in the know!
What happened to such young innocence? Where did it all so quickly go?
For now the kids play with computers, instead of watching the “Howdy Doody Show”!
They lose so much of their childhood, trying to become mature adults;
“Hey kids, what time is it?” It’s time to bully and hurl some evil insults!

A smashing reminder my Larry of what the original children`s programs used to be like. The days when children were allowed to just have good old fashioned innocent fun and games. When I was a child there was a program called Watch With Mother with Andy Pandy, Looby Lou and the Flower Pot Men, all wonderful puppets. It was a wonderful story time at 4pm with the children`s hour, when TV started for the day. They are wonderful black and white classics and a lovely reminder of how innocent and gentle life was for children, you can find the program on Google if you want to have a peek. Well done for this piece, it lets me have a peek into your boyhood.
I love you both
G xx
Hi G,
I would guess that your show "Watch With Mother", because of Andy Pandy, Looby Lou and the Flower Pot Men, all being puppets, was inspired by our Howdy Doody show. Those were such wonderful times, lost treasures of our history.
Love you too,
Linda and Larry
I think the BBC should put all those old programs on again for this generation to enjoy my Larry, even though they`re old classics, after all they repeat old films don`t they?! I love watching all the old black and white films, it lets us all see what England was like back then!
Love G xx

Hi Greg,

Peace and Love,
xox Larry
When I was a kid in the late 60s nice to watch Captain kangaroo and Boomtown which was a local show out of Boston that was a great show you don't have that anymore
Hi Greg,
I'm not sure if you realize this, but Bob Keeshan, played both Clarabell on the Howdy Doody show, and then became Captain Kangaroo. You are absolutely right, these are lost treasures that we no longer have.
Peace and Love,
xox LarryÂ
Yes Larry I did know that Bob was on howdy doody
Hi Larry lovely memories although we did`nt haveÂ
your "Howdy Doody"  time over here. I remember 5pmÂ
watching Jackanory a children`s programme which was a storyÂ
telling series which ran for around 30 years i `d never miss it
Sadly you are right that children now are to much into computerÂ
games and such, which is sad really
Enjoyed  love n hugs Debs xox
 Â
Hi Dear Debs,
It's funny that you and Georgina are both from England, with her show being "Watch With Mother" and yours "Jackanory". I'm sure they were both wonderful and so sadly today, they are lost arts.
Hugs, Peace and Love,
xox Larry
Hey Larry a great write my dad grew up watching this TV show was scared to the dummy as a kid. Once you cut the strings though he can't do nothing to you like my previous ex s lol I enjoyed your trip down memory lane . I watched the bozo show when I was a kid and loved it . Hope you are doing well. Rock
Hi Brother Poet Rock,
I tried to write this poem with no strings attached, but that did not work. Sounds like you were more successful cutting the strings with your exes. I've done some of that myself. I've heard of Bozo the Clown Show, where was it taped at? Glad you liked the poem. Great hearing from you!
Peace and Love,
xox Larry
