Where Does Youth Hide?
The day begins, tired eyes struggle to open...
Another sleepless night
Stagger to the bathroom, just what did I eat last night
That left a taste of overripe fruit?...
Brush those teeth... still pearls though..thankfully.
The shower pounds its piercing jets on a delicate head with
Hair follicles that are still not awake.
Soap in eyes means throbbing veined red eyes all morning
Look in the mirrorr...no no. dont look...dont ruin your day before it begins......
but curiosity wins
Am I suddenly wrinkle free?
Are those lids less heavy,
Does my neck still look like a turkey?
No..No...
and bloody yes!
Why did I buy a magnifying ‘beauty’ mirror...? When the reflection back is anything but!
I stare at that face.......could it launch a thousand ships?
Maybe years ago....but now?....well clearly not
The silk pillowslip that promised a crease free face on waking ...lied....
The magic beauty cream jar that cost a fortune but superstars swear by, half empty and filled with disillusion
Sallow skin with a mottled sprinkling of melanin gems.
Hair that needs ‘products’ to produce a youthful shine,
brushed within an inch of exfoliation..just....
A sigh...deep and lingering.
Sardonic smile and resignation looms ..until I see on the side
A photo of my love and I smiling with our arms around each other and I ask myself “where does youth hide?”
And with a smile I respond ‘ it hides inside”

Lodigiana I love this. Hair follicles that are still asleep, I get that instantly. A beautiful whimsical look at the ritual forced realisation every morning. As for youth hiding inside well of course. I am a bloke and we don't really get older than 14 or 15. I am sure that your youth is instantly visible in your famous violet eyes.

I love the fact that you understand absolutely what I was getting at.... terrible vanity insists we carry out the awful 'ritual forced realisation! on a daily basis!!!- you are absolutely spot on with that description! and I understand all about the 'bloke' thing living in a house full of them...as they keep telling me ..'men are only ever kids but with more expensive toys'!!!....Thanks so much for reading and commenting and making me smile!!!

This made me smile Lodi! and reading Nigels comments I think he knows a thing or two about man/child and never having to grow up or get older! I love how despite you seeing all the signs of the passing of time ..once you see the photo it has the power to almost make time stand still for you..it's a lovely sentiment and a warm , fuzzy ending- well done!
Thanks you as always Stevie! much appreciated x
Ana, I know these feeling well. My daughter came over last nite and I look at the woman she has become, I am overwhelmed by how old I look in the mirror. I see so much of me in her. I look back and see all the things I could have done and notice all the same issues I went through she is going through now. I can only tell her what I did but can't tell her what to do. Age might take my looks but it can't take my inner strength that comes with experience. beautifully inked girl!
Hi Lisa, oh my goodness I know just how you feel - time is a strange thing isn't it? I try to tell my kids that nothing ever really changes on the inside..and it's always a shock catching a glimpse of myself in a mirror and seeing someone totally different from the 'me' in my head! but age does also bring another beauty in the form of wisdom and that can be a beautiful thing to share...thanks so much for reading and commenting- love hearing from you ! xx
