Winter Poets: Ohio to Pennsylvania

Winter Poets: Ohio to Pennsylvania

Katina Woodruff Borgersen
Newark, Ohio

Bewildering ice-sickles reflecting, minus four degrees, a chance of thunder.
Slick are the walkways that lead to the future destination, Ohio a place for all.
Weeks without the light that once shone through the window stained-glass.
Patiently waiting on the pipes to unthaw, batteries, flashlights, extra food.

Matthew Harris
Schwenksville, Pennsylvania

  • Bright sun warms inside car revitalizing frozen, albeit lovely bones.
  • Cats and dogs lazily sprawl out filling selective patches of sunlight inside houses.
  • Snow plows barrel thru temporarily impassable inaccessible residential streets creating mounds resembling igloos.
  • Swarms of avid novice skiers descend upon Spring Mount.

Katina,

Lush green elevations, in a mathematical pattern, align with stars that light the path home.
The Great Circle Earthworks, “measured at 1,054 feet by 1,058 feet,” (1).
The Octagon Earthworks consisting of, a 34-acre Octagon Mound (2).
Sacred Mounds - built by the, “Hopewell culture between 100 CE and 500 CE,” (3).

Matthew,

  • Booming construction (i.e. vinyl city) overlay once uninterrupted farmland.
  • Slick hilly narrow roads wind their way into isolated sparse enclaves.
  • Schwenksville residents comfortably nestled within cookie cutter dwellings.
  • Southeastern Montgomery County Pennsylvania generally receives smattering sparse snowfalls, but enough to delay public/parochial schools.

Katina,

Shallow caves once inhabited by grey wolves, almost extinct in these parts, now coyote’s bark.
At the Licking River’s edge, photographing a flock of bald eagles soaring high above the pines.
Crimson red Cardinals perched within thick raspberry bushes, learning how to fly.
Non-native singing starlings compete for food with boisterous blue Jays, two perched barred owls.

Matthew,

  • Canadian Geese honk overhead flying south courtesy instinctual built in global positioning satellite.
  • White tailed deer (vector for Lyme disease) forage at wood's edge.
  • Unlucky doe (bros) gallivanting carrion feast, which carcass of former pose challenge for fretful drivers plucky enough to avoid mishap.
  • Gray squirrels hither and yon, to and from across route 29, the only thoroughfare thru Schwenksville.

Katina,

Cold to the bone, shaking, wearing a worn-out suede coat, walking along the snow-covered path.
Listening to the birds, welcoming new arrivals, wishing for spring, yet loving the day with nature.
Creaking joints, a little pain, hot chocolate, good strong coffee, two handmade scarfs, from a friend.
Family time, Thanksgiving, Christmas (I had to skip), grieving losses, anticipating future with words.

Matthew,

  • Useless fingers of frostbitten gnarled hands make feeble attempt to grasp fob and activate sliding doors to provide access into main lobby housing numerous apartment particularly B44.
  • Cold temperature gnarled hands down buttress yours truly favoring to remain inside hermit(age), i.e. one bedroom rented apartment at Highland Manor.
  • Cold wind howls giving banshee run for her/his money.
  • Sequestered inside toasty unit b44 after HVAC technician replaced malfunctioning compressor, which ear splitting din intolerant, thus necessitating hoovering (think ufo) in close encounter with space heater.

Katina,

It was 2008, when I was attending college at the age of 35.
Shortly after trying to write a memoir, I dove into the Twilight Zone.
For many years, fear, panic, self-doubt, defined my human existence.
Ordinary winter days, in and out of depression & mania, dreams of publication remain.

Matthew,

  • I evolved into a homebody over the last decade, essentially whiling away precious time meditating, exercising late at night, reading, writing, but no 'rithmetic, and perusing newsworthy websites courtesy Macbook Pro.
  • Recent dabbling with writing poetry unwittingly, lovingly, and blessedly birthed an inspiring friendship with versatile Cosmofunnel contributor, whose ambience, ebullience, and radiance washes over me like brilliant sunshine.
  • The medium of words allow, enable, and provide means to  limn my intimate feelings, and thus share poignant emotions, ideas, and thoughts with fellow readers across the web.
  • adieu: Matthew Scott Harris.

Awe...thank you Jill. This was the first time I've ever collaborated with a poet on creating a poem. We used labels initially like, Location/Environment, Wildlife, Personal feelings on the winter season to create the above. I had a load of fun and a little anxiety working on the project. It took us less than a week, emailing each other back and forth on the final details. The next poem, will be a formal poem. I'm hoping to pen a, Shakespearean sonnet with another poet.

I hope everyone reads, Matthew Scott Harris poetry, he is an incredible poet and word smith.
Together, we created this poem. :)

Thank you, Terry,

We used prompts initially. It's more of a nonfiction/narrative. I'm working on getting my rhyming brain to cooperate.  I aspire to be able to rhyme with ease one day. Have a great day!

When you have a new poem, you can always send me a message. I may miss them, if I don't catch them in the recent writings area.

Thank you, Terry. We were working on obtaining grants for our wildlife sanctuary which proved unsuccessful. I'll have to come up with the funds to build my own greenhouse. I'm hoping to have the novel finished within six months and a collection of poems within one year. I'm still working on learning iambic pentameter. I think once I master that skill, I'll be more able to help other writers at cossmofunnel learn.

Good luck with your business & your creative writing projects.

Katina,. I am working on a bigger greenhouse myself.  Had a commercial frame years ago.  They are expensive.  I have a feeling that you are a determined woman besides being a brilliant writer and you may get there sooner than expected.
I had to Google iambic pentameter for I didn't know what it meant.  Wow girl!  With my current problems I could never accomplish that but I'll be watching you!  I had to slow down for a while and started writing a little and got decent responses but I don't consider myself a writer.  I want to write a story about my colorful life ? when I get the time.  If you think about it I'd love to know when you publish so I can make a purchase.  Love to you!  Terry Kay

How I envy your greenhouse!

I did some window shopping online and wow, they are so expensive. A teaching greenhouse in Ohio, runs about 12,000 that's without a foundation. I have to sell at least one book to afford it. We tried for grants, but since we have a wildlife sanctuary, the grants available are only for teaching gardens and our property is littered with broken glass, I can never have children in the garden which is a bummer.

I went to school for English, however I'm still dyslexic, partially color blind and legally blind without my glasses. I've been learning how to spell words incorrectly all of my life. With the great invention of the computer, I'm finding that I can see the words clearer with the white back ground then if reading a regular book - is almost painful for me. One day, I'll learn how to spell.

I want to buy a speech reading pen, it allows you to see the words while you are listening to them being read outloud.

Don't let, iambic petameter, scare you.
Everything is Hard Until You Learn It.

Good luck for your business and for your writing.
Keep dreaming...spring will return.

Katina,  I'm surprised the greenhouse is only 12,000, I bought a commercial greenhouse frame 16 years ago for 10,000.  My ex has it now didn't think I would need it.  I'm thinking about just building an A frame with my son's help.
My oldest son is dyslexic and it was a struggle for him.  My problem is punctuation.  Do know a program for that? My memory is a pain in the butt but I'll find a way.
Why do you have glass on your property ?  I have an old oil pipe line that runs through mine but it's in the woods.
How cool that you have a wildlife sanctuary.  I love animals.  I've  fed baby birds, coons, rabbits and squirrels.  What a wonderful thing to do.  I was coming home late one night and out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a fawn on the side of the road.  So I quickly turned around and put on my bright lights got out and approached him at a steady pace and scooped the baby up.  Took it to the overnight vet clinic.  The babies umbilical cord was still attached.  Never saw the mother.  It went to a sanctuary.  You get all kinds of wildlife?
nice talking with you.  Off to bed.

I'll send you my email address. Then we can share garden stories, I'm sure you have a few. I'm on Face Book as: Katina Woodruff Borgersen, our sanctuary is called: Wings of The Future Butterfly and Wildlife Sanctuary. I'll fill you in on the glass issue, it's much better than it was in the past. Maybe we could swap secrets to gardening. Thanks, Terry, for all your replies. Cheers, Katina

My Dear Katina,

Wow!  You and Matthew really "iced" this one.  I've never attempted a collaboration, except of course, with my beautiful wife Linda.  Ha, Ha!
Anyway, congrats on another beautiful creation.

All my love,
Larry xxx

Thank you, Larry. We used some writing prompts during the process and neither of us had a concrete plan on how the poem was going to be set up. It's more of a narrative, nonfiction, slash, informative poetry style. We're going to try writing iambic petameter next. Thanks for the nice words of encouragement. I'm a poet in training. You should check out more of Matthew's poetry, he is such a word-smith. In order for me to write him a review, I have to spend time with looking up the words he uses. It's been a fun and educational experience.

This is amazing. I've done with my son but would love to try with yourself. Especially when I'm having op on 16th so in Ipswich hospital till then then op in Norwich 16th then back here for some reason but think they are worried I've had a strange sort of stroke? But drs haven't been great at revealing all of late and think is cos they don't want to worry me. But I'm optimistic so may just be to make sure I don't smoke or something. Hope you like my poem i wrote back to you and published on here too.
Best wishes and hugs,
James
