winter sunflower

winter sunflower

sunflower knows not how to smile
who can explain to her?
that she is beautiful and
the whole world is wrong
not all days are gloomy
when she woke up
it was not dawn but dusk
it was not spring beginning
but autumn ending
the child growing inside
was a child destined to perish
who can explain to her
that sometimes at birth
a child dies?
sunflower knows not how to smile
only to be sad
she sees the sun shining
but the sun tells her nothing
she understands not
words of comfort
but silence
I can only be a friend
to be and cry with her
for her misfortune
in her sadness
in her silence

I made this poem years ago for my niece. Β She had two failed pregnancies. Β She was a mother to her nieces and nephews, she was the best aunt, but I could see her sadness, because she wanted a child for herself. Β Things have changed, she is finally a happy mother, at the risk of her own body. Β I love her very much. Β I am her uncle, but we talk like good friends. Β Β
